With more and more people driving, including students with a learners permit, the roads are prone to getting busier and perhaps even a little less safe.

What is someone to do if they get in a car accident? Of course if you have auto insurance, you should have nothing to worry about but a deductible in the area of $500. What about those people that cannot afford auto insurance? In some states (i.e. Pennsylvania) it is against the law to drive a vehicle that isn’t insured, whether or not you can afford it. If cost is a great concern, and you live in a place where auto insurance is mandatory, then there are options to be weighed.

There are many companies across the country that offer auto insurance. The most recognizable companies would be the likes of Geico, Nationwide, Progressive, and my absolute favorite company Cheap Insurance. There are ways to save on your insurance with all of them.

One thing that most of the corporate giants wont tell you, is that your rates can be higher based off a poor credit score. If you have a solid, well established credit score you will save some serious money annually. Of course, there are other smaller companies that don’t base your rates off of credit, but they are not available in all areas yet (i.e. Cure). The best basis for getting a good money-saving rate on your insurance is to be a SAFE driver. That seems to be really underrated nowadays but fact of the matter is, if you drive safe, you’re viewed as less of a risk and you insurance in turn is lower.

For those student drivers, still trekking through high school, you can save on your auto insurance as well. I’m sure your parents will be very thankful. Get good grades, plain and simple. Companies believe that a student with higher grades will be a safer driver, then say a student with a below average G.P.A. Some schools even offer a drivers education class, that if passed with a grade of B or higher, can also save you money on your insurance when you take it to your agent.

You can also save money on your insurance by driving a safe car. When a car is made, it is put through a safety test and given a safety rating that can be as high as 5 stars. A car with a 5 star crash test safety rating will definitely help lower the cost of insurance for you, given that they are much safer cars to drive on the not so safe roads. Believe it or not, the color of the car can also affect your insurance rates. Red is typically the color that will raise your rates annually. It is looked at as the color of choice for high-performance cars, and an easy target for cops.
